Naples backcountry fishing charter catching redfish with Captain Mark Ward near Marco Island

Winter Fishing Report: Naples & Marco Island Backcountry Action

Mid-winter fishing conditions are in full swing across the Naples and Marco Island backcountry, including the Rookery Bay Preserve, and that means productive fishing deeper in the creeks, bays, and mangrove shorelines. Cooler water temperatures push fish into these protected areas, creating excellent opportunities for consistent action and mixed-bag days.

Target species this time of year include snook, redfish, speckled trout, pompano, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, jack crevalle, and more. The variety of species available during winter makes this one of the best times for anglers looking to stay busy and bend rods throughout the trip.

As always, my goal during the winter months is steady action and diversity, and the bite has been delivering. We’ve been having great success fishing Ebb N’ Flow Upgrade Jigs in 1/8- and 1/4-ounce sizes, paired with Z-Man Mulletron, ShrimpZ, and MinnowZ soft plastics. These jigs are perfect for working deeper water while maintaining a natural presentation. We also mix in artificial lures and live shrimp, depending on conditions and fish behavior.

Winter Fishing Tactics in Marco Island, Naples & the 10,000 Islands

Winter fishing in Marco Island, Naples, Rookery Bay, and the 10,000 Islands is all about slowing down and fishing the right structure. Cooler water temperatures concentrate fish in deeper creeks, bays, channels, and along mangrove shorelines, making this an excellent time to dial in specific tactics for consistent action.

Sheepshead Fishing

Sheepshead are heavily structure-oriented during winter. We target dock pilings, oyster bars, bridge pilings, and rocky shorelines using small jigs or live shrimp fished tight to the bottom. Light leaders and a patient presentation are key, as sheepshead bites are often subtle. Keeping the bait close to structure without snagging is the difference between a few bites and a steady bite.

Speckled Trout Tactics

Speckled trout are commonly found in deeper holes, troughs, and channel edges this time of year. We focus on soft plastics under light jig heads, working them slowly along the bottom. When trout are aggressive, suspending plugs and twitch baits can also be effective, especially during warming afternoon tides.

Pompano & Snapper Techniques

For pompano, moving water is critical. We fish sandy areas near passes, creek mouths, and edges of oyster bars using jigs tipped with shrimp or soft plastics. A steady hop along the bottom often triggers strikes. Mangrove snapper are typically holding tight to structure and respond well to live shrimp or small jigs, especially when presented naturally with the tide.

Adapting to Conditions

Winter success in Southwest Florida comes from adapting to tide movement, water clarity, and temperature changes. Fishing deeper water during cold mornings and shifting shallower as the sun warms the flats can make a big difference.

These winter techniques make Naples and Marco Island backcountry fishing productive and action-packed, with multiple species available on every trip.
