The Naples and Marco Island inshore and backcountry fishing has seen lots of action of late with a multitude of species and good tides.
Coming off the full moon a few days ago we’ve had extremely low tides in the morning. Subsequently the low tide concentrates the fish in the holes and the troughs and fishing has been great. Trout have been plentiful along with snapper, sheepshead, jack crevalle, a few pompano and some mackerel and a stray bonita off the beaches. With the low tides and full moon brings good tides, meaning good water flow which the fish like.
3/8 oz. swirl tail jigs have been working well in brown along with white. I like to hop them off the bottom then let them settle. The bite is always on the fall. Everything will eat jigs but primarily this time of year trout, jacks and pompano are best bets.
Live shrimp also work but it’s not as fun as jigs plus jigs cover a lot of territory and help find the fish.
The weather looks good for the next couple weeks.
A few openings are still available around Christmas and New Year so call asap to book your trip.

Rookery Bay and the magic of the backcountry saltwater estuaries of Southwest Florida.
The backcountry saltwater estuaries of Southwest Florida, including the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, offer an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and exceptional fishing. This unique ecosystem is a thriving coastal habitat where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico, creating an environment rich in biodiversity and an angler’s paradise.
A Haven for Wildlife
These estuaries teem with life, both above and below the waterline. The mangroves, seagrass beds, and tidal flats provide critical habitats for a variety of species. Birdwatchers will marvel at the sight of ospreys, roseate spoonbills, egrets, and herons gliding over the waters or nesting in the mangroves. The reserve is also home to endangered species such as wood storks and manatees. Aquatic life thrives here as well, with dolphins often seen frolicking in the estuarine channels, and sea turtles frequenting the region’s waters during nesting seasons.
World-Class Fishing Opportunities
The estuaries are legendary for their fishing, attracting anglers from around the globe. The labyrinth of mangrove-lined creeks, hidden coves, and shallow flats provides perfect hunting grounds for prized game fish. Snook, known for their explosive strikes and acrobatic fights, are a signature catch in these waters. Redfish, with their distinctive tails and powerful runs, are also abundant. Spotted seatrout and mangrove snapper are frequent catches, while tarpon—especially during the spring migration—offer unforgettable challenges for those seeking the “silver king.”
The mix of saltwater and freshwater supports a rich food chain, ensuring year-round fishing action. Whether you prefer using live bait, artificial lures, or fly fishing, the estuaries provide ample opportunity to test your skills. The tidal flows demand strategic planning, adding an exciting element of challenge to each outing.
Exploring Rookery Bay
Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, spanning 110,000 acres, is a jewel within this region. It’s one of the few remaining undisturbed mangrove estuaries in the United States, protected to preserve its pristine beauty and ecological importance. Kayaking through its tranquil waters offers unparalleled access to secluded fishing spots and a chance to immerse yourself in nature. Guided eco-tours and educational programs provide deeper insights into the estuary’s critical role as a nursery for marine life and its importance in protecting the coastline.
A Balance of Adventure and Conservation
Fishing in Southwest Florida’s estuaries is as much about the experience as the catch. Anglers often practice catch-and-release, supporting conservation efforts to maintain healthy fish populations. The region’s rich wildlife and untouched landscapes remind visitors of the importance of preserving these habitats for future generations.
Whether you’re chasing trophy fish, marveling at a manatee, or simply enjoying the serenity of the mangroves, the backcountry estuaries of Southwest Florida and Rookery Bay offer an unforgettable experience. It’s a place where the line between sport and nature blurs, leaving visitors with a deep appreciation for the beauty and abundance of this extraordinary environment.
