We had a three day cold front move through Southwest Florida this past week, bringing cloudy skies, cooler temperatures, and some much-needed rain. It definitely slowed things down for a few days but as always this time of year, that didn’t last long. The tide has turned, and we’re right back into classic spring conditions with highs in the low 80s and overnight lows in the low 60s. Just about perfect weather to be on the water.
With that warming trend, the fishing is already beginning to rebound in a big way. As conditions stabilize, I’ll start throwing the cast net again before trips, loading up on pilchards also known locally as shiners. These are some of the best all-around live baits we have and will produce for just about everything swimming in our waters, including snook, redfish, jacks, and even smaller tarpon.
Water clarity is improving both in the Gulf and throughout the backcountry, especially around areas like Rookery Bay and the surrounding islands. As the water warms and pushes past that key 73-degree mark, we’ll start to see a noticeable uptick in shark and tarpon activity. These fish will begin showing up again in their usual springtime spots backcountry bays, passes, and along the beaches getting ready for the peak season ahead.
Snook fishing is also on the rise. As water temperatures continue to climb heading into April, these fish become much more active and aggressive. We’ll start seeing more consistent action, along with better-quality fish moving into the mix. Warmer water, cleaner conditions, and increased bait presence all combine to create ideal conditions for some really solid spring fishing.
Everything is lining up the way it should this time of year, and if the weather pattern holds, we’re setting the stage for an excellent stretch of fishing here in Naples and Marco Island.
It’s a very busy time of year so call ahead to book your trip.

Marco Island & Naples Fishing Charters: Tarpon and Shark Fishing Heats Up This Spring
Spring and early summer mark one of the most exciting times of the year for anglers fishing Southwest Florida. From Marco Island fishing charters to Naples fishing charters**, April through June brings prime opportunities to target two of the most powerful gamefish in the Gulf tarpon and sharks. Whether you’re fishing the backwaters of Rookery Bay or the nearshore beaches of Naples and Marco Island, this is when the action truly comes alive.
Tarpon Fishing in Naples, Marco Island & Rookery Bay
Tarpon season begins to ramp up in April and reaches its peak in May and June. These “Silver Kings” migrate along the beaches and push into the passes, bays, and backcountry waters like Rookery Bay, offering anglers a variety of ways to target them.
Early in the season, tarpon are often found staging in deeper holes, river mouths, and channels. As water temperatures rise, they become more active and start cruising shorelines and beaches. Sight fishing becomes a huge part of the experience, especially on calm mornings when rolling tarpon give away their position.
Top Tarpon Techniques:
Live Bait Fishing: Using live mullet, crabs, or thread fin herring is one of the most effective methods. Free-lining or suspending baits near rolling fish produces consistent action.
Drift Fishing Passes: Fishing areas like Gordon Pass or Capri Pass on an outgoing tide can be extremely productive.
Artificial Lures: Experienced anglers may throw swim baits, DOA Baitbusters, or flies for a more technical challenge.
Timing is everything. Early mornings and tide changes are often the best windows, and understanding tarpon behavior is key to success. This is where fishing with a seasoned guide can make all the difference.
Shark Fishing Action Along the Beaches
While tarpon steals the spotlight, shark fishing in Naples and Marco Island is just as exciting this time of year. As water temperatures climb, sharks migrate into the area, following bait schools and tarpon.
From blacktip and spinner sharks to bull sharks, anglers can expect explosive runs and unforgettable battles. Shark fishing is especially popular for families and groups looking for high-action trips.
Top Shark Fishing Tactics:
Fresh Cut Bait: Bonita, jack crevalle, ladyfish, and stingray are all excellent choices.
Chumming: Creating a scent trail helps draw sharks in, especially in slightly murky water.
Heavy Tackle: Sharks require stout rods, large reels, and wire leaders to handle their strength and teeth.
Most shark fishing takes place along the beaches and nearshore waters of Naples and Marco Island, but they can also be found in passes and deeper backwater areas.
