Fishing Report February 9, 2014

The weather this past week in beautiful SW Florida has been picture perfect. The temperature has been a balmy 80 degrees daytime with light winds and decent tides. With the low wind this week the water in the gulf and in the backcountry is gorgeous.

I have the pompano cornered and have been catching almost as many this week as I ever have. These strong fighters, in the same family as the permit, are fun to catch on jigs and aren’t to bad for dinner either.

Snook are getting more active as the water warms. The gulf temp is in the low 70’s and the backcountry is pushing 76 degrees. Trout, snapper, redfish, gag and goliath grouper and some unusual catches this week include the bat fish, see pic below. Triple tail have been under some of the stone crab trap buoys not far off shore which we’ve been fishing on our way home this week at the end of our trips.

Tarpon have definitely moved onto the backcountry. This calm weather and clear water will lead up to some awesome sight fishing opportunities.

Please give me a call to discuss fishin’. Availability is limited as were in peak season. 239-450-9230

Kristen and her grandfather had a great morning earlier this week. This time of year, once in a while the fog rolls down the beach, looks cool, pic below.
